Summer is nearly here! And it is going to be busy for the campaign. To get fired up and ready to go, we'll be hosting a picnic and volunteer gathering at our place on Saturday May 30th.

If you haven't yet had a chance to visit us, our house is quickly becoming a progressive club house and we love it! Having the privilege of hosting so many phenomenal people, and having the opportunity to learn and grow with them, has been one of the highlights of this race so far. Honestly, getting to meet so many more neighbors and new friends who believe in the power of community like I do is the all the motivation I need to stay on course. You all are AMAZING. As I meet more and more people, I learn about more and more good things happening in the community. This Saturday, we got a last minute invite to a community kick off event for the youth programs at our municipal golf course. My sidekick joined me to head over and enjoy some sun and fun with our neighbors. Prokids and First Tee are nationally renowned programs to get underserved kiddos involved in golf, a sport somewhat hard to break into. It was great to see so many folks supporting this work

Tonight, the Planning Commission will be taking up he General Plan Update, Smart and Sustainable Corridors Specific Plan, Climate Action Plan, and Draft Final EIR (FEIR). Planning staff gave commissioners briefings last week.

Here's what we learned more about at the briefing: Senate Bill 79 (SB 79), the Abundant and Affordable Homes Near Transit Act takes effect on July 1. In order for us to phase implementation and reflect the higher density requirements near transit in a way that intentionally relates to the rest of our General Plan, our plans needs to be adopted by the city council by June 30. Planning Commission is the first hearing on the way there.

Our general plan update has been a long time coming and we need to get it done, but rushing things is never my favorite way to do business. Still, I see some of the rationale as to why we want our own plans adopted to reflect the spirit of SB79. I'll have a lot of questions tonight, as usual.

For any of you aspiring commissioners or council members, hitting that button to "request to speak", is a muscle we have to exercise, it's part of the job. And real talk: It feels super intimidating at first! Half the time, I have a list of questions before the hearing even begins, and then find myself scribbling down 5 more during the hearing. It may annoy our chair that I'm smashing that button a lot but I figure, if I have these questions, chances are others who aren't on the dais may too. Isn't it our responsibility to represent them? So, I get over the nerves and ask away. Tonight will be no different.

Yesterday, I was overjoyed to get the endorsement of the North County Young Dems. It is exciting to see young folks fired up about civic engagement and I am honored to have their support. I hope to make them proud.
